By Mike Teso, CEO of Liberty Trailers
I've spent most of my career building manufacturing companies. When Liberty Trailers started, we were a small operation with big ambitions. As we've grown into a multi-facility manufacturer producing tens of millions of dollars in trailers every year, one challenge has become increasingly clear: manufacturing has no shortage of data. It has a shortage of actionable intelligence.
Every day our business generates thousands of transactions: sales orders, purchase orders, production schedules, inventory movements, payroll, machine utilization, warranty claims, and supplier lead times. The problem isn't collecting data. The problem is turning all of that information into better decisions before problems become expensive.
For years, our management team spent countless hours pulling reports from different systems, exporting spreadsheets, reconciling numbers, and trying to answer simple questions: Which jobs are making money? Where are we losing margin? Why did production fall behind yesterday? Which suppliers are becoming unreliable? How much cash will we need in six weeks? Which customers are becoming less profitable? By the time we had the answers, they were already history.
Manufacturing Doesn't Need More Reports
Most software companies promise dashboards. We've bought dashboards. We've bought reporting tools. We've bought ERP systems. None of them actually tell management what to do. They tell you what already happened. That's an enormous difference. As manufacturers, we don't get paid for knowing what happened yesterday. We get paid for making better decisions today.
Why Allira Systems Caught My Attention
What impressed me about Allira wasn't another dashboard. It was the vision. Instead of simply displaying data, Allira connects information across the business and uses AI to identify patterns, risks, and opportunities that leadership might otherwise miss.
Imagine walking into work and seeing:
Steel purchases are running 7% above forecast because three vendors have increased pricing. Switching the next purchase order to Supplier B could reduce projected material costs this month.
Or:
Production efficiency on Line 2 has declined for three consecutive weeks. Based on historical trends, this is likely to impact delivery performance within 12 days unless staffing or scheduling changes are made.
That's not reporting. That's intelligence.
AI Should Make Managers Better
There's a misconception that AI is coming to replace people. I don't believe that. I believe AI will make great managers dramatically better. The best leaders still make the decisions. AI simply gives them better information, faster. That means less time searching for answers and more time solving problems.
The Opportunity for Manufacturers
Margins in manufacturing aren't huge. Sometimes one or two percentage points determine whether a year is good or bad. If technology can help a manufacturer improve profitability by even a small amount, the financial impact compounds quickly. For a company doing $50 million in annual revenue, improving operational efficiency by just 2% could represent approximately $1 million in additional annual operating profit, depending on its cost structure.
Those kinds of improvements don't usually come from one massive initiative. They come from hundreds of better decisions made every day. That's exactly where I believe AI belongs.
Looking Forward
We're entering an era where manufacturers will have two choices: continue relying on yesterday's reports, or begin operating with real-time intelligence. The companies that embrace AI won't simply work faster. They'll make better decisions, react sooner, waste less, improve margins, and serve customers better. And over time, those advantages compound.
As someone who's spent years growing a manufacturing company, I'm convinced AI won't be a luxury. It will become a competitive requirement. And I believe platforms built specifically for manufacturing, like Allira Systems, have the potential to change how factories operate over the next decade.
The future of manufacturing won't be built by replacing people. It will be built by giving great people better intelligence.
